Nashville, the capital and cultural center of the great state of Tennessee, has a lot to offer visitors this Christmas season. Known for its music scene, hiking and outdoor experiences, and vibrant city life packed full of charm, this Christmas season in Nashville has lots in store for the perfect family experience.
Whether you already have the best outdoorsy vehicles in mind to travel in such as SUVs or RVs, or if you plan on jumping on a bus to get around, there is going to be something for everyone.
WindRock Park is located a short drive east of Nashville just before Knoxville and offers adventure seekers a range of outdoor experiences centered on off-roading. If you have access to the best outdoorsy vehicles, then you can bring them with you onto their many 4X4 trails or hire something from their selection of dirt bikes and other off-roading vehicles. Their campground is the perfect place to park an RV so that you can stay longer and enjoy the benefits of the park, making this one of the prime locations to visit during the Christmas season.
You will find some of the best outdoor vehicles in Nashville, so don’t feel you have to drive your SUV across the country for this experience when you can travel light and find a set of wheels once you arrive.
If you are ready for a quality road trip in your RV or SUV, then you will want to consider a live music road trip in and around Nashville. Venues such as Marathon Music Works see some of the best bands in the region and country performing during the festive season. This year, they will have Grammy award-winning artist Billy Strings performing.
While on the road, you will also want to stop off at the 3rd and Lindsley venue as well as BB King’s Blues Club for an experience you won’t soon forget that brings local talent along with national and international names in the music industry into one place.
Bus tours are a great option for the entire family to enjoy as you ride all around Nashville’s best sites trying to catch your breath while laughing more than you ever have before. Humor, joking, and having fun is a great way to celebrate the festive season with your family as the comedians onboard let everyone know what being a redneck truly is from a local's point of view.
For Christmas, the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway is going to be kitted out for the Jingle Beat Drive-Thru. Jingle Beat is a light, sound, and sensory experience that brings everything Christmas directly to you and your family while you navigate through the speedway and enjoy everything that it offers from the safety of your own vehicle.
It is like driving through a Christmas light show wonderland without having to deal with crowds as your family can remain in the car without missing anything, and the best part is that it is suitable for all ages.
The Cheekwood Gardens are a marvel to behold on an ordinary day in Nashville. For the Christmas season, however, they wrap the entire garden with over a million lights to create a magical nighttime spectacle that is bathed in all the Christmas colors. Kids can meet Santa Claus along with two of his reindeer and have their pictures taken before you enjoy the mile-long illuminated walk through the gardens for a relaxing night.
One of the most iconic parts of the Nashville Christmas scene is lighting the giant tree in downtown Nashville. This year, the Christmas tree lighting ceremony will take place on the 3rd of December so if you want to catch it you will want to be at Public Square Park before 5.30 pm. There is always music and food trucks at this event to keep you and your family entertained, and Santa always appears for photoshoots and to give out surprise presents.
Centennial Park’s annual Music City WinterFest combines live music, local crafts and goods markets, and an array of food truck options that will give you some of the best festive flavors around. They normally incorporate inflatable rides for kids to play on, and the markets also include performers in case you need some additional entertainment than what they already offer on the stage.
Christmas wouldn’t be complete without a winter-themed tube park, and the Reindeer Run fulfills this role perfectly. The Reindeer Run Tube Park is suitable for all ages, and all it takes is grabbing a tube before jumping down the 32-foot ice slides. It is like tobogganing in the middle of the city and will give everyone who tries it out a rush.
Nashville is packed full of great Christmas attractions for people of all ages, making it a great family destination. Pull up your RV to one of the great campgrounds, go off-roading in an SUV, tour the many local music venues, or stop off at the seasonal Christmas celebrations and enjoy the food and everything the city offers. You can’t miss a Christmas in Nashville this year.

Summer isn’t the only time that families can get away and enjoy each other’s company. During the school year, there are several breaks that make great opportunities for Nashville, TN families to take a COVID-safe vacation.
Along with several long weekends, the Metro Nashville Public School District calendar features a few longer breaks that can be ideal times for some family fun. If you want to take advantage of every one of those school breaks, here are some COVID-safe vacation tips that can help.
During COVID-19, traveling can be risky. Hotels tend to have a lot of traffic, and there is no way to know whether they’ve been exposed to or currently have the virus.
Luckily, there is an amazing alternative to hotels. By reserving a whole-house rental from the TurnKey platform, you can reduce your risk. Plus, you can choose a property with a full kitchen, creating great opportunities to prepare healthy meals, allowing you to avoid going out or having to pay high prices for delivery.
With your staycation, you can also explore exciting Nashville neighborhoods you don’t usually visit, such as:
You’re almost guaranteed to find a great vacation rental that can meet your needs, allowing you to enjoy activities and take in the sights, all while staying healthy and relaxed.
If you want to have a quintessential vacation experience, a road trip could be your perfect option. It’s a chance to experience the joys of the open road, explore scenic byways, and spend time traveling together as a family. Plus, you may get to run off and see sights you wouldn’t normally see if you stayed in larger cities, creating opportunities for unique memories.
However, if you also want to stay COVID-safe, you may want to modify your approach. By renting an RV for your road trip, you can eliminate the need for hotels. Plus, many RVs have simple kitchens, allowing you to reduce your need for restaurant meals.
One of the other benefits of an RV road trip is the ability to enjoy the great outdoors during your journey. Some National Park Service campgrounds can support RVs. The same goes for many state parks with camping areas.
Just make sure to set up your reservation well in advance if you want to head to a popular park. That way, you know your spot will be available when you arrive.
However, if you end up in a bind, remember that you can usually stay in an RV overnight at most Walmart locations. While a Walmart usually won’t have RV hookups, it can still be a safe, reliable option.
If you want to head out to have some fun, focus on outdoor activities that support social distancing. For example, during colder months, skiing or snowboarding might be ideal. Once you’re cruising down the slopes, you’re not near other people. Plus, many people cover their faces to block the wind and keep them warm.
If you’re in a warmer area, hiking or biking in a park could be a solid option. While you may pass by other people, you won’t usually remain together in groups. Grabbing some horses and going on trail rides could also work, and dirt bike riding or quading may be worth considering, too.
Ultimately, just focus on low-contact, outdoor activities. That way, you can have fun while keeping your family COVID-safe.

Two words: Mule Mondays. Need we say more?
Take a walk around 12South and then take a food break on the patio at Urban Grub! Make sure to ask for treats (and you just might get an entire plate full)!

We cannot get enough of their waffle fries. We’re not saying we’ve come here and only ordered waffle friends, but we aren’t above it.

BBQ. Fried okra. Banana pudding. And a patio with dogs?! Sign us up.
Photos: @hattiebs
With multiple locations around town (and even one in Vegas), this is one of the main hot chicken staples of Nashville.
Photos: @burgerup
Here’s another restaurant with multiple locations, each restaurant is independently owned and therefore each has a slightly different menu. But they all have one glorious item in common: truffle fries.
We love a place where both you and your floof can get a treat, and Bobbie’s has that! You can enjoy a milkshake or dipped cone (as well as food items) while your dog enjoys a pup cup!

Tucked away in Germantown, come here to enjoy some pizza, beer, and good people watching.
Photos: @diskincider
Even if you don’t have a dog, you are sure to see several on the patio and inside at Diskin Cider! Grab a cider and get ready to play some fun games, all while spotting some of the cutest pups.

We will end our list with everyone’s favorite ice cream shop. We can’t tell you which flavors to get, but we recommend getting the mini flight with three scoops.
But there has also been so much I’ve missed: coffee with friends, trying new restaurants, late nights in smoky rock clubs surrounded by people we love, smudgy stamps on hands after a night out dancing. And underneath these fun things I've missed have been the heavier questions we're facing: how to protect the vulnerable, how to love our neighbors and how to navigate the impact quarantine has had on small businesses, musicians and the people who make Nashville what it is.
So, as signs of life return to Nashville, I can’t help but feel cautious hope and optimism for the day when we can gather with friends at a local restaurant, when bands play sold out shows and when Broadway is full of people having the time of their life, pedal taverns and all.
Here are some of my favorites that I can’t wait to get to back to:
I've certainly missed my "third places" during the quarantine, and while there are plenty of coffee shops to camp out in in Nashville, Fido continues to be my go-to. I love grabbing a spot by the windows and writing, reading and people watching on a Sunday afternoon. They also have great food for when you get in the creative flow and want to stay through dinner.
Photos: @fidonashville
For the days when we kind of miss watching Netflix all weekend but also want to put on real pants, enter The Belcourt. This historic theater is my favorite place to catch a movie in town, and they always have great independent films and music docs you can’t see anywhere else.
There are so many great restaurants in Nashville, but Barcelona is the one I go back to over and over. Their food is just the best, I’ve never met a wine there I didn’t like and I never regret ordering way too many dishes because I just can’t choose a favorite (I like to think of quarantine snacking as training for the future tapas I’ll eat here). Here’s to hoping we never have to live without patatas bravas ever again.
Photos: @barcelonawinebar
I ended 2019 at Pearl Diver, it was the last bar I went to before quarantine and it’s calling me back. Maybe it’s the memories of innocent 2019 me who had no idea what was coming for her, maybe it’s the humid summer weather arriving in Nashville, but I can’t wait to be sipping mai tais and mojitos on their patio once they reopen (honorable mention to NVR NVR, Duke’s and the Printer's Alley bars and hotels for other places I can’t wait to spend a Saturday night).
Photos: @pearldiver_nashville
One of my favorite stay-at-home activities is mixing some cocktails and cozying up with our record player. Add in the quarantine binge of the Zoë Kravitz remake of High Fidelity, and I’ve been itching to browse Grimey’s for some new vinyl. Living Waters Brewing next door is also a great place for a coffee or local beer while you admire all your finds.
Photos: @grimeys
CANOEING THE HARPETH
I’ve done plenty of communing with nature this quarantine, but not with other humans or anywhere outside a three-mile radius of my apartment. So, as summer rolls around, I'm hoping to be able to get out in some new nature, and being on a river is my favorite kind of nature. The Harpeth is an easy float in a kayak or canoe, and there are great outfitters like Foggy Bottom for boat rentals and shuttles.
Few people have captured the heart of Nashville through hospitality like Tom Morales, and his restaurants have helped make the Nashville food scene what it is. Personally, I can't wait to watch a sunset from the Acme rooftop, but you also can’t go wrong with a meal at The Southern or The Loveless Cafe if you really want a taste of what makes this city special.
Photos: @acmenashville
LOCAL NONPROFITS
Nonprofits have been impacted by the quarantine too, and our community needs them more than ever as so many lives have been affected by the events of the last few months. While I look forward to the day when we can get back out in crowds to volunteer, the good news is we can find creative ways to support them now! Some of my favorite local organizations are Preston Taylor Ministries, Gideon’s Army and Thistle Farms, all of which do amazing work. MusiCares also has a relief fund for those in the music industry affected by coronavirus, and Second Harvest Food Bank is helping address food insecurity, including helping children who are no longer able to get school lunches.
I'm sure we've all used the phrase "I miss _____," at some point during quarantine, and for my husband and I, it's always, "I miss B.B. King's." This is my favorite spot to go dancing in Nashville, especially on Fridays and Saturdays when the B.B. King's All Star Band is in the house playing pop, soul, funk and disco. Living room dance parties just aren’t cutting it anymore.

LIVE MUSIC
It's just not the same without music in Music City, whether that's catching a national act at Ascend or a friend's band at a local club, bar or restaurant. Mercy Lounge is one of my favorite places for a rock show, you might be able to talk me into a night downtown if Robert's is involved and I'm so glad to finally have a good jazz club in Rudy's. I don't know when or where our first show will be, but one thing is certain: that will be the day when Nashville might just start to feel “normal” again.

While I have enjoyed working from home, I am ready for things to go back to as normal as possible. I am running out of shows and movies to watch, can only take so many daily walks, and need some human interaction since I live alone.
As I am dreaming of things going back to normal, I’ve made a list of places and activities that I can’t wait to get back to. Who knew we would miss eating inside restaurants so much?!
1. The Well Coffeehouse. Easily my favorite coffee shop in Nashville. Not only do they have great coffee, but they give back with every purchase and help build clean water wells in third world countries. I already have a list going of people that I want to grab coffee with when all is said and done!
2. Concerts. Not only do I work in the music industry, but I love attending concerts. Seeing friends working, listening to great music, being around other people that are energized by the music…it is all just a wonderful experience that I never want to take for granted. Some venues I love are Ascend Amphitheater, the Ryman, and Bridgestone Arena!
3. Shopping at the grocery store. Or really any store. I’ve been doing grocery pickups for months now, so I would love to just browse through a grocery store without worrying about staying 6 feet apart from people. I’m slow to the game, but I just recently discovered the beauty of Trader Joe’s and can’t wait to add that into my weekly routine. I’m also wanting to explore the Franklin Farmers Market more this summer!
4. Laying out by the pool. With all this downtime and beautiful weather, it seems unfair that I can’t get a tan!
5. Shopping at Vinnie Louise. I love shopping local and I love downtown Franklin, and Vinnie Louise is one of my absolute favorite places to shop. I want to go look at all the pretty clothes, try them on, and continue to support local.
6. All things beauty…a massage, a manicure & pedicure, a sauna, a haircut. ALL THE THINGS PLEASE. I go to the Nail Bar in Cool Springs, Lunatic Fringe in Melrose, and Pure Sweat + Float Spa in Cool Springs for all of the above. I love supporting local!
7. Eating on the patio at Chuy’s. Creamy jalapeno ranch sauce. Maybe an adult beverage. Sign me up.
8. Attending a Sound’s game. I don’t think this is going to happen, but a girl can dream. Going to baseball games is one of my favorite parts of summer.
9. Going to Jeni’s ice cream with friends. Getting to look at all the ice cream options and trying samples.
10. Getting my car washed. Oh, how my car needs a really good wash on the inside and outside.

Cara Finger, the founder and chief bag giver of the non-profit organization My Bag My Story, is bringing great awareness and care to children in the foster care system. Having been adopted herself, she developed a special love of volunteering for children through the encouragement of her parents. Originally from Texas, Cara has lived all over the United States where she was able to leave her mark by finding ways to help many organizations that support children in need.
Currently, Cara resides in Nashville, Tennessee where she and her husband, Christian, are raising three teenagers, two of whom are adopted. Her youngest son, Christian, was adopted from Russia, while her middle child, Corrinne, was adopted from China. Cara’s oldest, Caroline, is currently finishing her first year at Samford University. Even before adopting her family, Cara felt that she wanted to take the initiative and be a resounding voice for children in the foster care system. In 2016, she and her husband made the generous decision to continue giving back to children in the foster care system by applying to be foster parents. Since then, her family has cared for three children in the foster care system and provided them with bags to carry their belongings from My Bag My Story.
Volunteering is an act that Cara says has been “embedded in her DNA.” She’s been encouraged and taught to give back to others throughout her entire life which she credits to her parents. Cara has volunteered all over the United States and has a passion for caring for children specifically. When she was just six years old, her mother took her to volunteer at the Buckner’s Children’s Home in Lubbock, Texas. She vividly remembers the joy in a child’s eyes when receiving a new pair of shoes. Since then, Cara believes those lessons and experiences have led her to contribute to society in her own way, one of those being, My Bag My Story.
Created in 2016, her non-profit organization works to provide bags for children in the foster care system. Cara’s inspiration for this self-run non-profit started when foster children would come to her home with nothing but a trash bag to hold their personal belongings. Noticing that this was unusual, Cara took the initiative to have bags made to give to children. She says that she chose backpacks because they “give the child self-respect and dignity,” something to hold on to, even when they were moving from house to house.
Cara Finger is working in a number of ways to be a voice to the children in the foster care system, and her valiant efforts are creating change day by day. Cara says, “We can’t make all the difference, but we can make a difference” and she encourages everyone to do their part and serve however they can. Cara is named Nashville’s Volunteer of the Month for her magnanimous heart. She and other volunteers like her are celebrated by Doing Good, a local 501c3 nonprofit which celebrates those who do good. The Williamson County Fair is a favorite of many in and around the area. Complete with food, entertainment, art, animals, and more, the fair runs smoothly on account of its many participants and volunteers. One of those volunteers is Leah Kennedy, a fifteen-year-old student at Fairview High School. On her own, she raises and shows chickens, but as a volunteer and a friend, she has worked with many other animals, including livestock and horses, both in the show rings and in the barns.
Having been an avid member of 4H since youth, Leah now serves on the Williamson County Junior Fair Board, holding the position of Secretary and Vice Chairman. Both positions have showcased her leadership skills and her knowledge of how the fair functions. She loves the work she does and knows what it takes for the fair to flourish each year. Her observations have led her to partake more and more each year in various aspects of the fair. “Once I saw all the work that went into the event, I felt that I needed to serve my community and give back to them,” Leah says.
In addition to working with the animals and in the show rings, Leah has also helped in the youth art section, assisted the judges, worked on setting up and tearing down, as well as organizing the Funnel Cake 5k Run. Eager and happy to serve, Leah can always be counted on to assist wherever needed. She also works at events like the Tennessee Farmers’ Cooperative Meeting, and helps other organizations like the Nashville Rescue Mission. Her passion for volunteer work goes beyond the fair and beyond her love of agriculture. “I am not going to ignore a chance to achieve more to help others thrive,” she says.
For example, she loves working with children. The Williamson County fair allows Leah the opportunity not only to spend time with children but to help them learn and explore different topics like farm animals and agriculture in the community. She enjoys introducing them to some of the fair’s animals and answering their questions. “I love working with little kids and seeing their faces light up. It is the most rewarding thing,” she says.
More recently Leah has found ways to give back to her community. Due to the recent pandemic, a need for medical masks has arisen. Leah has been making some of these masks and delivering them to local EMS workers and also some of her family members. It is actions like these that display the joy she has for helping her community and the heart she has for those working hard around her.
Leah is named Nashville’s Volunteer of the Month for her generous heart. She and other volunteers like her are celebrated by Doing Good, a local 501c3 nonprofit which celebrates those who do good. For more information or to nominate someone for Nashville’s Volunteer of the Month, visit DoingGood.tv.

Founded in 2012, Hattie B’s now has 7 locations including 3 in Nashville and one in Vegas. There are 6 different heat levels ranging from no heat to “shut the cluck up!!!” and southern style sides including pimento mac & cheese and red skin potato salad. If you happen to save room for dessert (good luck), the banana pudding is some of the best I’ve ever had! The original location on Broadway is usually the most crowded, but my favorite location is the newest one-off Melrose. Catering and special events are also available.
Photos: @princeshotchicken_nashville
With quite the hilarious story of their beginnings, over 100 years later, Prince’s has stood the test of time. This hot chicken comes in 7 different heat levels, and we will leave to our imaginations what the "XXX hot chicken" tastes like. They are open until midnight on Friday and Saturday for all your late-night cravings, but make sure you don’t stop by on Sunday as they’re closed.
Photos: @bigshakeshotchicken
Big Shake’s has 3 locations and has been featured on Man vs Food. There are 5 heat levels, and you can also order fish, shrimp burgers, or family-style meals. Big Shake’s is home to “The Death Row Hot Chicken Challenge” in which contestants can choose from two different challenges. “Dubbed the hottest chicken in the world, Big Shake’s has seen hundreds come for their chance at winning the coveted “I Survived the Death Row Challenge” t-shirt and a crisp one-hundred-dollar bill. However, less than 20 people have completed the challenge in almost 4 years.” Best of luck!
Photos: @partyfowlnash
With three locations and a fourth on the way, Party Fowl is the newest player to the game. Almost everything they have is made from scratch, they have 5 different heat levels, and they offer more than 20 local beers on tap. Talk about a restaurant that loves their city! Their menu ranges from hot chicken items to gumbo & salads, to burgers. Nobody will be left out here!
Photos: @pepperfire
Pepperfire is set to open at their new location in March 2020, so you’ll just have to wait a few more weeks to try it out! They have been featured on The Travel Channel’s Chowdown Countdown and feature seven different levels of heat. You know Pepperfire is the real deal because you can get a side of fried okra and collard greens!
Photos: Boltons
Boltons has a little bit of everything including hot chicken, ribs, wings, catfish, and seafood. There are no heat levels as everything is made spicy, so this might not be the spot for everyone. Beware they are closed on Mondays!

A favorite local juice bar to get your daily fruits and vegetables has now opened a location in East Nashville at The Shops at Porter East. Their juices will definitely start your day off right, packed full of vitamins. We also love their extensive smoothie and acai bowl menu. As the weather is warming up, it will be great to stop off here for a frozen breakfast, lunch, or snack.
Photos: @slowburnhotchicken
This casual hot chicken spot, from Madison, TN, recently opened a new location in East Nashville. It is quickly becoming one of the city’s best for a traditional and satisfying take on the local delicacy. The East Nasty chicken wrap and the breakfast burrito are two favorite menu items. All hot chicken can be tailored to your personal taste from love (no heat), to on fire. For the very adventurous, there is even an off-menu heat level “elephant repellant” – indulge at your own risk!

This restaurant and bar is now open in Germantown. It is the second outpost from TJ Lynch and Richard Knapp, who founded the original New York City location in 2011. The name of the restaurant is a play on an old nickname for gin and their inventive cocktails certainly do not disappoint. Also, don’t miss their incredible all-day brunch featuring items like a mouthwatering double cheeseburger, waffle fries, “eggo waffles,” and a signature breakfast burrito.
Photos: @crosseyedcrittersnash
The Graduate Hotel, now open in mid-town, near Vanderbilt’s campus, is a design lover’s dream. With whimsical artwork and nods to Country music around every corner, this is a great spot to spend your stay in Music City. The Poindexter coffee bar, in the hotel lobby, offers delicious biscuit sandwiches all day. Furthermore, the Cross-Eyed Critters Watering Hole Karaoke bar is now open, featuring a stage with an animatronic backup band. The karaoke joint offers ice-cold drinks and an outdoor taco trailer to fuel late nights, definitely a must-visit for a fun night out.
Photos: @fableloungenashville
Nashville’s latest cocktail and piano bar is becoming a popular watering hole. It offers a true speakeasy experience with nods to the late 19th century. Their upstairs patio provides a relaxing set up for a night out and a great spot to catch up with friends. Additionally, their in-house creative cocktails or “notions” are unique and satisfying, a few favorites include the Ginflower Tini and Love & Riches.
Photos: @roundaboutmarketandcafe
A cute café serving local goods from Bongo Bakery, Corner Market, and Coco's entrees has opened up on Music Row. Stop by for a quick breakfast or lunch and choose from a variety of made-to-order sandwiches as well as grab and go options.
Photos: @brightsidebakeshop
This local bakery quickly rose to fame in East Nashville for their mouth-watering pastries including a rotating menu of sweet as well as savory croissants, tarts, and brioche. It was common to see a long line forming at their East Nashville outpost long before doors opened for the day. Thus, the advent of the larger space in West Nashville is very welcome and a great chance for the rest of Nashville to experience this pastry magic. The menu changes weekly, check out their Instagram to see the latest offerings.
