Nashville’s Volunteer of the Month Elizabeth Graham Pistole not only helps develop young individuals with special needs but also bring awareness to the community about the strong value they can bring to society. “Many individuals with special needs, including my sister, are not allowed to reach their true potential because of the low standards and stigmas surrounding them,” says Pistole, “I volunteer in order to disprove the negative perspective on disabilities and show society that individuals with special needs have a plethora to contribute.” Pistole serves alongside many individuals with special needs every week through the non-profit she co-founded, Dancing Divas and Dudes. Through it and other non-profit organizations Pistole volunteers for, she hopes to change the narrative on individuals with special needs in the community. “Most people think that they take away from society rather than contribute (to it), which is a negative stigma that needs to be changed.”
